Valentine Collins found in Records of Rockingham County, North Carolina 1786

I have been on a quest to find more information about my 5x great grandfather...I was recently given this information about him being on a Tax list and he is listed as having no land but is taxed on 1 poll.  Also on this list is a Jordan Gibson...

These records were found by Susan Higgins Williams a fellow cousin and an avid researcher of the Gibsons....

https://www.familysearch.org/records/images/image-details?page=1&place=393039&lifeEvent=105057&lifeEventRecordTypes=124032&rmsId=TH-909-71612-85793-45&imageIndex=116&singleView=true&fbclid=IwAR1JoDSvbggHMm5xB6RtXDB8MtTNXY5LGb4CeCKn0vZgCXjiHrmlDCcHoZc

So we can find Valentine Collins in Rockingham County, North Carolina in 1786...

After talking to another cousin, Patrick Nichols, informed me that the law was changed in 1784 to this...

Acts of the North Carolina General Assembly, 1784
North Carolina. General Assembly
April 19, 1784 - June 03, 1784
Volume 24, Pages 543-649
-------------------- page 543 --------------------
LAWS OF NORTH CAROLINA, 1784.

CHAPTER I.
An Act to amend an Act, intituled, An Act for ascertaining what property in this State shall be deemed taxable property, the method of assessing the same, and collecting public Taxes.
I. Be it Enacted by the General Asembly of the State of North Carolina, and it is hereby Enacted by the authority of the same, that all lands as described by the aforementioned Act, town lots with their improvements, all free males and servants twenty-one years old or upwards, and all slaves male and female between the age of twelve and fifty years within this State, shall be subject to the payment of public taxes, and the public taxes on such property and persons shall be assessed and proportioned as follows, viz: All lands shall be liable to be taxed by the quantity, and freemen and male servants twenty-one years old and upwards, and slaves male and female between the age of twelve and fifty years, shall be subject to a poll-tax.

Thank you Patrick for this information...So we now can put Valentine Collins born about 1765...

I haven't searched any other records in Rockingham County other than land records looking for Collins where I did find that a William  C. Collins and his wife Hannah sold their property in 1854...https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSYD-8S4P-6?cat=386882

I am not sure if this could be Valentine's brother or cousin or what...but it gives us another clue!!

Are Valentine Collins and Vardy Collins brothers?

Valentine Collins and Vardy Collins are not brothers, at least not through their father's lines.  According to this website:  https://www.familytreedna.com/public/coremelungeon?iframe=yresults

Now with that being said it is entirely possible that they have the same mother. But as of yet we have no proof of Valentine's or Vardy's mother....

Valentine Collins "A Lighthouse in the Wilderness History of the Clear Fork Baptist Church"

In my research for my elusive ancestor Valentine Collins, I came across some information that he was in the minutes of a book title ...."A Lighthouse in the Wilderness  History of the Clear Fork Baptist Church" Published by the Clear Fork Baptist Church Albany, Kentucky.

Now what Valentine Collins was doing in that area we really have no idea....other than there is mention of a William Bunch....possibly his uncle or father...still no information on who Valentine's Bunch father is at the time of this writing.

Here is a link to the book so you can download it and read it at your convenience.  https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/25698-a-lighthouse-in-the-wilderness-history-of-the-clear-fork-baptist-church-with-facsimile-pages-from-the-church-minutes-from-1802-to-1902?offset=2&fbclid=IwAR2ms-BHj9Q2hjV7TJylux6HLJJR0QGJZi0_pLjfaSIBBprZu_Izur_5Fuw

Here are the excerpts of the information that I found on Bunch, Collins and Cole.

from page 107..." The church met on the fourth Saturday in December 1805 and after prayers proceeds. 1st Bro. Michael Speck reports that he cited Bro. Wm. Bunch to appointment make last church meeting and Bro. Bunch made objections and refused to come and the church appointed Bro. Michael Speck and Bro. James Wood and Bro. Wm. Wood to visit Bro. Bunch and endevor to labor with him and report next church meeting."

from page 108..." The church met on the fourth Saturday in January 1806 and after prayer proceeds. 1st Wm. Bunch excluded from the church for disorderly conduct and a contempt? against the church in withholding an acknowledgement from the church while the report was know condeming the conduct lay against him. "

from page 112...." The church met on the third Saturday in September 1806 and after prayer proceeds. 1st A door being opened received Mary Trigg (Frogg) by letter, also Valentine Collinson, received under the watch case of this church. "

from page 114..."The church met on the fourth Saturday in January 1807 and after prayer proceeds. 1st Bro. Brock suspended by the church and the case continued till next meeting. 2nd The referance from October meeting laid till the church meeting in may. 3rd The church taken of a change against Valentine Collins in your various observations made and appointed Bro. Wm. Wood and Isaac Denton to cit him to next church meeting."

In the next entry it states that the "case respecting Bro. Collins continued till next meeting."

from page 115...."The church met on the fourth Saturday in March 1807 and after prayer proceeds. 1st Bro Collins came forward and after examining the charge against him the church thinks is proper to continue him under sispence till satisfaction is given respecting a report of a contradiction existing in the where his membership is."

from page 117..."The church met on the fourth Saturday in July 1807 and after prayer proceeds......4th The church takes iy? a charge againsts Valentin Collins who is a trancient member under supence for prevailing action. And the church appoints Bro. Jessie Robert and Bro John Lee to cite him to the next church meeting. "

from page 118...The church met on the fourth Saturday in August 1807 and after prayer proceeds. ....2nd The case of Vallentine Collins laid over until next meeting lead and approved. "

also from page 118... "The church met on the fourth Saturday in September 1807 and after prayer proceeds. 1st Valentine Collins who was a trancient member under the watch care of this church and suspended on a former report of a contradiction existing between him and some of the members where his membership and charges here being taken in against him for pevoctions and after due labour used with him and he neglected to hear the church. The church declares an unfellowship with him and agrees to inform the church on Black Water. And Bro. Isaac Denton, Wm Goodson, Harden Williams appointed to write to Black Water church in Valentine Callins case --in Bro. Samuel Coles case mentioned at last meeting. 2nd The church agrees that Bro James Williams keep the horse (house) which was was formerly provided by the Bever (Beaver) Creek Church for the use of Bro. Bunch by paying $3.50 to Bro. John Lee in trade and $3.00 to Moses Beck in trade and the expences of making Bro. Bunches coffin. "

So from this we can assume that Valentine Collins was at or near Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky from September 1806, until sometime around September 1807.

Valentine Collins and Dicey Gibson Collins (children)

Here I am going to list the children that I have been able to find that are possibly Valentine and Dicey's Children...However.....We are not sure when they got married exactly, so it is possible that Valentine had children with a first wife, and that Dicey had children by a first husband.......

1) Hiram Collins b. 1800-1810 d. before 1850?

2) Shepherd Collins b. 1802-1810

Here is what I have found on Shepherd....Formation of Breathitt County, Kentucky taken from Wikipedia...On February 6, 1839, a portion of Clay (along with portions of Estill and Perry Counties) was partitioned off to create Breathitt County. It was named for Governor John Breathitt.[4]

***1840 Breathitt County, Kentucky Census***

Shepherd Collins is listed as having the following in his household.
02001 males
20001 females

2 males b. 1830-1835
1 male b. 1810-1820 (This would be Shepherd)

2 females b. 1835-1840
1 female b. 1810-1820 (This would be Polly)

***1850 Breathitt County, Kentucky Census***

Shepherd Collins age 38 (b. abt 1812)

Fereby age 10 (b. abt 1840)
Susannah age 7 (b. abt 1843)
Dicey age 5 (b. abt 1845)

***1860 Breathitt County, Kentucky Census***

3) Obedience Collins b. 1804 Virginia d. 1839 Magoffin County, Kentucky (according to some others)

Obedience married a man by the name of William Cole....According to their first child's birth Obedience would have been 8 years old if she was born in 1804.... which this is highly unlikely....I would presume that she would have to have been at least 13 years old....so more than likely she is one of the 2 females listed in William Cole's  census record below....born 1791-1800.

***1830 Census, Floyd County, Kentucky***

Valentine Collins

This is what I have personally found for Valentine Collins (Mulengeon) Okay so Wilkes County, North Carolina wasn't formed until 1778...So it is not possible for Valentine Collins to be born in Wilkes County!!!!! Or is it??????

{Per Wikipedia}

The county was formed on April 20, 1778 by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly of 1778 from parts of Surry County and Washington District (now Washington County, Tennessee). The first session of the county court was held in John Brown's house near what is today Brown's Ford. The act creating the county became effective on February 15, 1778, and the county celebrates its anniversary as February 15. Wilkes County was named for the English political radical John Wilkes, who lost his position as Lord Mayor of the City of London due to his support for the colonists during the American Revolution.

If he was born in the surrounding area of what in 1778 became Wilkes then he had to have been born in {Washington District or Surry County} either one will work but just not Wilkes!!!

Valentine Collins

**Listed in 1790 Census, Wilkes County, North Carolina**

Vol Collins 1-0-2
1 free white male 16 & up

2 free white females

__________________________________________________________________________________

Valentine is found on the Wilkes County Tax List, 1797 listed as owning 50 acres and 1 pole. Also listed in this record is a "Martin Gipson".  I think this is the same Martin Gipson/Gibson that is Dicey's Brother.  Record can be found here.....https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS3J-X312-X?i=217&cat=1689329

Ashe County was created from Wilkes County in 1799.... From Wikipedia....The North Carolina legislature created Ashe County in late 1799 with an area of 977 square miles (2,530 km2).

__________________________________________________________________________________
So...Here are the adjacent counties to Wilkes...Lookie here...Ashe County, North Carolina where Valentine, Vardy Collins are both listed in the 1800 census...Adjacent counties are as follows:

Alexander County (south)
Alleghany County (north)
Ashe County (northwest)
Caldwell County (southwest)
Iredell County (southeast)
Surry County (northeast)
Watauga County (west)
Yadkin County (east)

........................................................
However it is very possible and extremely probable that Valentine Collins, Ambrose Collins, Vardy Collins and Thomas Collins never moved...the County lines were moved.  Ashe County, North Carolina was developed in 1799.

***Wikipedia*** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashe_County,_North_Carolina

"In the 1780s, Ashe County was a part of the self-declared "State of Franklin", within the boundaries of its Washington County. The "State of Franklin" marked the beginnings of the State of Tennessee. The North Carolina legislature created Ashe County in late 1799 with an area of 977 square miles (2,530 km2). Many family surnames noted in the 1800 Ashe County Census, Blevins, Hart, Bare, Barker, Stamper, Miller, Burkett, Gambill, Baldwin, and Ballou as a sample, are still present today. "

"Ashe County is located in extreme northwestern North Carolina. The county is bordered by two states: Virginia on the north; and Tennessee to the west."

Valentine Collins, Vardy Collins, and Thomas Collins are all listed in a book "Ashe County A History" by Aurthur R. Fletcher and this book can be found on www.familysearch.org and downloaded for free.

By 1801 we find Valentine over the border in Virginia in the Stony Creek Baptist Church minutes.....

In 1801 and then again in 1803 he is listed in the Minute Books for the Stony Creek Baptist Church which is in what is now Scott County, Virginia.  But before that it was.....from Wikipedia..."Scott County was formed by an act of the General Assembly on November 24, 1814, from parts of Washington, Lee, and Russell Counties" .

This copy of what is perhaps the first book of the Stony Creek Primitive Baptist Church, located on Stony creek, near Fort Blackmore, Scott County, Virginia, was in the possession of Mr. Scott Beatright of Colburn, Virginia, whose grandfather was once a Minister of this church.
The book is written on paper and bound between covers made of home spun cloth. The
handwriting is very good and the ink has lasted well.
Copied August, 1966, by Emory L. Hamilton, Wise, Virginia, with a copy filed in
the Archives of the Southwest Virginia Historical Society, at Clinch Valley College,
Wise, Virginia and a copy sent to the Virginia State Library, Richmond, Virginia."

A little History and Geography about Scott County, Virginia....
Scott County, Virginia taken from Wikipedia.....................

History
The early settlers found evidence of a former native village at the mouth of Stony Creek on the Clinch river.
Thomas McCulloch was the first white settler within the county, in 1769. Daniel Boone commanded several forts located here in 1774 during Dunmore's War, and several more were built in successive years. Even so, the Chickamauga Cherokee leader Bob Benge remained active in the area throughout this time, during the Cherokee–American wars, up until he was killed in 1794. By the times houses were built in the 1790s, the largely Scots-Irish population had increased by reason of its situation along the Wilderness Road. After Scott County was formed in 1814, the first court took place in 1815, and the first public schools in 1870.

Warren County was established 26 November 1807 from part of White County. Early records may be found under White County. County seat: McMinnville.  (Information taken from Family Search . Org. )

So here we are again with him crossing "State Lines"....Because Hawkins and Hancock County Tennessee is where we find him next....listed in 1816....

By 1820 he is listed in the Floyd County, Kentucky Census...as follows:

Kentucky

• 1820 Floyd County, Kentucky Census

***Valentine is listed as having 6 FPC in household.  No ages are listed***

***1820 Census, Floyd County, Kentucky***

Valentine Collins 1820 Census Floyd County, Kentucky...I have found the ages for the people that were in his household....

9 free colored males under 14 (born 1806-1820)
1 of these would be David Collins b. 1807
1 of these would be Otary Collins b. 1816

3 free male colored age 14-26 (born 1794- 1806)
1 of these is Joshua Collins b. 1805

1 free colored male age 45 and up (born before 1775)
This would be Valentine b. abt 1768

8 free colored females under 14 (born 1806-1820)
1 of these would be Margaret Collins b. 1809

1 free colored female age 14-26 (born 1794-1806)
This would be Obediah or Obediance Collins b. 1804

1 free colored female age 26-45 (born 1775 - 1794)

1 free colored female age 45 and up (born before 1775)
This could be Valentine's wife possibly Dicey b. about 1763

Or at least I am HOPING that this is correct.

There were ten Collins families on the 1820 census. Valentine, Bradley, and Meredith were the only Collins' listed as FPC. Adam Burchfield was living between Valentine and Martin Gibson. Martin Gibson is thought to be the same Martin Gibson born about 1776 in Orange Co, North Carolina. He was bound to James Carrington in 1784 along with sisters Dicey and Susannah. Dicey may be the wife of Valentine Collins.

As you can see by his obituary his name isn't correct, but several of the other things are correct.
